Pipe project completed at longs steel uk LTd
Thanks to detailed planning, hard work and a positive approach to teamwork, an original section of gas main pipe has been replaced at the Dawes Lane Coke Ovens (DLCO) within budget and on schedule. The 42-inch pipe runs to Appleby Frodingham Coke Ovens (AFCO) and plays a vital part for downstream production as it feeds the rest of the Scunthorpe site.
A survey on the 36-year-old pipe showed that a section was in need of replacement so essential work on the gas main was undertaken during the stoppage period. This was done under construction, demolition and maintenance (CDM) regulations. The section of pipe needed to be isolated and a nitrogen purge had to be completed. As nitrogen can lead to asphyxiation, strict control measures had to be followed.
The team completed this challenging pipework replacement with no safety issues, supervised by the project team at DLCO and working with RJD Engineering Company.
Alex Chadburn, Operations Director at RJD Engineering Company, said: “The contract to replace 84m of the existing 1970s gas main in a 54-hour shutdown window was certainly challenging, particularly since there were several major changes of pipework direction between the two fixed points.
“With a tight manufacturing and installation programme, the quality of shop and site welding demanded detailed planning between RJD Works, the RJD site team and Tata Steel. This paid dividends and the work was completed without any incidents and on time. Well done to everybody concerned.”
Don Smith, Process Engineer at DLCO, said: “We encountered a few problems that meant there wasn’t as much planning time as we had hoped, so we thought we wouldn’t be able to do as much as we wanted to. But, we worked really hard as a team and completed it all within time.”
All the original pipework will be replaced using best practice from this project and planning has already begun for the next phases.
Don concluded: “The maintenance engineers had to step in at short notice due to us being low on numbers and we had lots of help from the project team at AFCO, so we’d like to say a big thank you to them – we wouldn’t have managed it without their help.”
